Getting Along: Citizen Interaction In DemocracyAs you learned in the previous lesson, there are numerous ways citizens can participate in and influence the American political process. In fact, if citizens do not pay attention and participate, the system does not work nearly as well as it could or should. When citizens do participate, though, there are also frequent opportunities to interact with others who are also seeking to understand and influence the process. When these interactions occur, differences of opinion are frequently exposed and conflict can occur. Participating in politics is important, but an gaining understanding of what it means to engage others in the process with respect and civility is just as important. In this lesson, you will learn about the importance of cooperation and compromise and how healthy dialogue and participation contribute to a vibrant participatory republic.
