American Founding, the Bill of RightsSo far in this course you have read about the American Founding, the Bill of Rights, the structure and functions of the national government, and federalism. Along the way, you have become aware of how individual citizens are connected to the government and its decisions. You have also had the opportunity to think about the thousands of ways your life is impacted by the things the government does (or does not do). But this is not a one-sided equation; in the United States, the government does not simply affect the people. The people create the government by electing leaders who make decisions on their behalf. Many citizens choose not to be informed or to participate. However, as Abraham Lincoln declared, American government is “of the people, by the people, for the people.” If the people don’t know what is going on and hold their leaders accountable, the system simply will not work.
