Please read Stephanie Cloward’s persuasive speech as she invites you to think about the different roles of public officials.

Sample Speech

As the government elections roll around, we as citizens of the United States need to ponder and determine what we want from a public official. What has the candidate promised if elected to office? What political party do they belong to? Will the candidate be able to fill the requirements and expectations put on them? Many questions go through our minds. But, there are a few questions that are usually put aside when analyzing a candidate. “Are they a person of good morals, values, and character?” “Can this person be trusted, and will the candidate do their part to help the commonwealth?” “Is this person considered to be an example that others can follow?” Now many people may say that these aspects have very little to do with how they perform in office. I strongly believe the opposite. These questions need to be asked and they must be a heavy determinant in our vote. The public, especially the young people of our nation, need someone that is willing to help protect their rights. They also need someone that will be an example to them as they go through life with choices and make important decisions.

A public official has a very important job. They must keep order and happiness among the public; they must deliver the things which they promised, in order to move ahead and be efficient; and because of all the people that listen and follow them, they must be a role model. They must be an example. Many officials fail to take this responsibility seriously. They are a disgrace to society and an embarrassment to our country. They have no morals, they fake their values and create their beliefs. They will lie and manipulate to get into office. We all know what they do. We don’t believe it is right. But many of us continue to vote for these people and give them power and authority. I don’t want to follow someone who lies and manipulates people. Why are these people continually put on a pedestal as great leaders?

We as citizens need to take a step back and reevaluate what we are doing. What are we showing the younger generations? That it’s all right to have leaders that are corrupt, unethical, and manipulative? NO! We need to stand up for what we believe. We need to show our children that good always combats evil. We need to show our children that the democratic system of our country can and does work with good the truthful people in office. The world around us continues to be plagued with drugs, diseases, and corruption. Why must it also be among our leaders? We need to count on them to help us get out of crisis. We need their help to return to family values and regain a sense of pride.

Our country and our government is one that is looked upon by many. Many countries instigate and copy the great system that we have. Our country has been blessed with so much technology, knowledge, and resources. Our leaders need to take these advantages and use them for a good cause, to help others with it and, more importantly, use it to enable our country to prosper and become a more efficient world leader. Having a leadership position is not a popularity race. It is not to see how much control, power, and attention one can gain. It is to lead and administer to the people, to efficiently use the resources and technologies that we have, and to be an example that many can follow.

Please remember this as the elections come closer. Make sure that your decision has all of this in mind. And make sure that you vote for someone that not only lives by what they do, but lives by what they say.
