2. Replace ordinary income with capital gains
Capital gains are taxed at a much lower rate (15 percent if your marginal tax rate is greater than 15%, and 5% if your marginal tax rate is 15% or less) than ordinary income, which may be taxed at up to 35 percent. Earn as much of your income as possible in the form of long-term capital gains. Spend your time picking good, well diversified, and tax efficient mutual funds, and then hold those funds for a long time.
