Product design is the process of defining the quality characteristics or product features that are required to meet the customer needs.

 

Product feature is a property possessed by the product that is intended to meet certain customer needs and provide customer satisfaction.

 

Product features are essential for product performance and human safety, to meet environmental requirements, product saleability, return on investment, price requirements, continuity of demand, etc.

 

While designing a new product, the designer should keep in mind that a new product is not about what it is, but about what it can do? Only when it can be used to advantage over the existing products, can it earn relevance in the market- place. Creating value for customer is the primary concern for the designer.

 

Product or service should be designed for better performance, human safety, eco-friendliness, regulatory requirements, higher saleability, manufacturing at lowest cost of production.
