Quality control is defined as “operational techniques used to fulfil the requirements for quality”.  Quality control activities are focused to maintain the quality goals.  It involves:

 

• Monitoring the process
• Elimination of the causes of unsatisfactory performance at all stages of the process

 

Thus, quality control is a process of maintaining the standards.  It prevents undesirable deviations from the quality goals set for products and processes.  As per the Demeaning Cycle, quality control activities can be divided into four steps:

 

Plan: Prepare a quality control plan.

 

n       Choose what to control

n       Decide the units of measurement

n       Establish a measurement system

n       Set a standard of performance (quality goals)

 

Do: Measure the actual quality performance of the product or results.

 

Check: Compare the actual quality performance to quality goals (standard of performance).  Evaluate the performance, interpret the deviations.

 

Act: Take appropriate corrective and preventive actions on the differences.

 

Quality control is applicable in all activities when quality needs to be controlled.
