FREE online courses on Maximum Managing People - Managing At The Top
If this is your predicament don't sweat it.
Since you are at the top you will have executive authority. Use it to enjoy your
work. Go on company work trips. Make them in exciting and vibrant places. Use
the extensive perks at your disposal to have a first class stay.
If you have one secretary, get a personal
assistant. Get them from the opposite sex if that is your cup of tea.
Make sure your office has a great view and
is tastefully furnished. Position it far ‘from the madding crowd.' And be a good
sport to those who do seek out your professional skills, advice, etc. Everyone
needs a few friends.
Realize in a sense that you have won the
ballgame. This will mitigate any bad feelings you may have. After all if you
have reached the top you have beaten the odds.
Be serendipitous by exploring different
concepts. To conceptualize well, take a trip to the countryside and relax to
build your thoughts. Carry a note pad or a palm PC of course. Or go down to a
local pub and hash out ideas with complete illiterates for a cross-sectional
view.
Promote peace everywhere – both in external
environments and internal ones. It is hard to do business during wars, famines
and terrorist attacks. Thus good business dictates a peaceful environment
unless, of course, your company benefits from upheavals.
Have a good nose for business. Think like a bloodhound. If someone has
repainted an office be sure you sniff this as you walk by. Keep a close eye on
things.
Stay up to date with technology. Buy the
latest cellular phones. Use video conferencing technology. Spend money on the
hottest consultants. This will help your company and will not require anyone's
internal assistance.
Buy from market leaders. If IBM is today's
premier e-business solution providers then use them. Pay their rate and get the
best service. If tomorrow it's Hewlett-Packard, then fire IBM and use HP.
Cut costs quickly and effectively. Fire
people without remorse. One manager
once mentioned that “if you're going to kill someone, just pull the trigger,
don't think about it.”
While there is no need for unnecessary
intimidation, there are reasons for everything. If people require long
explanations and hand holding, don't let them pull you down. Let them bury
themselves.
Maintain few emotional attachments to
people, businesses, or products. You are not making a museum. If you want to
keep the memory of a loss making plant, make a corporate video, and then close
the plant down. Ivory towers are for academics and lesser mortals.
