Laterally moving plates slide against each other, creating fractures and pressure. Plates squeezing together produces low mountains, and plates spreading apart creates wide valleys. Earthquakes are frequent in areas of laterally moving plates. The San Andreas fault is a good example of laterally moving plates. As the plates skid by one another, earthquakes occur from north of San Francisco down to Los Angeles.
