One good rule to discuss ideas and
opinions with others without having to contradict the other person is to use the
word ‘and' in place of ‘but' or ‘however.'
We tend to use the word ‘but' as a connector to present our opinion after stating that of the other person's. ‘But' and ‘however' are likely to offend the other person because they tend to show the superiority of your point over that of the other person. Show your respectDevelop a habit of showing your consideration and respect to the other person's point of views before starting to present yours, viz:
“No one can fail to appreciate the point of view presented by Mr… I agree with him on…. I respect him for…And like him, I too want to contribute an additional point of view for your consideration. What would happen if we…” Train people to discuss issues without offending the other person, using the above suggestions. As an exercise let them change roles during a discussion; let one speak in favor of what his/her opponent was speaking for, a little while ago. Speaking in favor of what someone does not believe in widens one's horizons and dilutes one's sense of attachment to his/her point of views. |
