- Why Knowledge Management
It is no longer a question of cutting corners, saving on
costs and overheads here and there, or of improving on select operational
parameters. It is a question of survival strategies, competitive advantages, and
creating wealth by leveraging invisible capital, mainly organizational
knowledge.
Survival and success in this century depends entirely on an
organizations ability to respond to these changes with new coping mechanisms,
dynamism and effectiveness. This is true for individuals, for communities and
for organizations.
While the enormous changes in information technology has
thrown up immense possibilities and opportunities, there are enormous gaps in
the access, control and utilization of technology, information and knowledge.
And these gaps divide countries, regions, different sections of society, and
even people within an organization.
Not only that! Even when these access gaps are met, there are
these fundamental challenges:
- How to
use technology to convert challenges into opportunities?
- How to
convert information into knowledge?
- How to
apply knowledge for solutions, value-addition and competitive advantage?
- How to
build and sustain an enabling environment for knowledge based organization and
community?
This means bringing about changes in attitudes and values,
changes in our ways of working and communicating, and changes in the entire
framework of relationships and processes - among people, within organizations,
and in the interface with the socio-economic environment.
To be enabled and empowered and to face the challenges this
century, therefore, means not merely accessing technology but developing the
capacity to manage knowledge.
