- Deforestation
Despite various kinds of acts, rules, regulations and
streamlining procedures, forests continue to be denuded. It is estimated that
between 1950-1980, nearly 4.5 million hectare forest area was diverted. After
Forest Act (1980) there has been reduction of diversion for non forestry
purposes and according to Economic Survey Report, the present rate of diversion
is 16000 hectare annually. (The forest area in the recent years has not changed
much because its diversion for non forestry purposes has been more or less
compensated by afforestation). The annual deforestation rate during 1981-90 (10
year period) was 0.6% (0.34 million hectares) according to FAO.
