Communication, the piece of EDI technology, which
complements the translator, should be viewed as an extension of existing
capabilities. The difference in communication for EDI is not in the
technology; rather, it lies in the fact that the other party is outside the
organization's network environment.
Most organizations have communications, which serve various
elements of their internal computing requirements. Terminals in remote locations
are connected to host computers, which are, in turn, connected to each other.
Wide Area Networks (WANs) connect geographically dispersed facilities and Local
Area Networks (LANs) serve logical work groups or physical sites.
