FREE online courses on CRM - Developing People-The Key To Success - Take
Them Higher
- Encourage Personal Development
In Harriet Beecher Stowe's “Uncle Tom's Cabin”,
a little girl called Topsy is asked where she came from. She says she ‘just grew'! Unfortunately, in real life, employees
don't just ‘grow'. Growth implies development of the whole person.
Merely learning skills does not lead to all-round development. The kinds of
abilities, which determine personal development, are those to do with our sense
of self-worth. The drive for this activity has to come from within, often
stifled by…the boss!!
Motivation and self-development converge; create conditions where they can
flourish.
Employees in such a
situation may be:
a.
Fixed in a groove, resistant to change
b.
Works without enthusiasm; getting no recognition, is
trapped in a vicious circle
c.
Hi-flier, rising fast, can develop tunnel-vision by
the time he reaches the top
Find ways to break the
block, the vicious circle, create awareness: the greatest gift you can give your
subordinates. Encourage periodic SWOT analysis, and self-awareness.
Don't forget to give
‘strokes', and reward signs of revival.
